What is the SMART tool?
SMART is the acronym for the most widely trusted coaching tool. With SMART you can transform your goals into achievable worthwhile touchpoints within your career and life progress. It stands for Specific Measurable Agreed Realistic and Timed.
The importance
Specific
A goal needs to be specific as much as it needs to exist. If you really want to know what you will achieve with all your hard work, and you “generally” aim your efforts, your success will be only being generally close to what you want. All the hard work you do will get easier to carry forth if you know that you are striving for what you really want.
Measurable
Have you ever been in never-ending pursuit? Have you ever kept trying for “more” for the sake of “more”? This is what we call the futility of the immeasurable. If you keep at it at a goal that is never reached you will become disappointed at best, or even lose yourself in a never-ending and ever-consuming effort. The result is often an unbalanced life and a reduced feeling of self-worth that is not merited!
Agreed
Your most trustworthy interlocutor is yourself. You know when you agree to something you are being truthful. So, adjust your goal to something you want to agree to. And yes, it is as simple as that.
Realistic
Now, this is a term that is often misused. A goal can be realistic and enormously ambitious at the same time. It can be small too I guess. But do you really need a “Goal” for something small? Just be sure that what you are aiming at is not an impossibility. A one-in-a-billion shot unrealistic, don’t forget that there are not 1 billion people with your goal, for you to be the one to achieve it.
This is why lottery winnings are not a SMART Goal.
Timed
The most wonderful part of this tool comes at the end. Putting time limits to your goal keeps you both from procrastinating and gives you the time frame for evaluation and reevaluations of your goal. Did you finish way too soon? Maybe next time you can set a more tight schedule. Did you not get it done? What needs adjusting to get it done? Do you need extra steps toward your goal? Do you need help from your allies?
The time of your deadline is for you to reincarnate your goal!
